Inspiration

On a typical morning, I went out to buy a cup of bubble tea and as usual, I can’t find a place to throw it off after I finished. As expected, I ended up holding my empty bubble tea cup and walk for 20 min on the street just to find a garbage can. As you can see, when you’re outdoors, you just don't get the experience like you have in your house, so this app is dedicated to provide you with necessity that you may only access when you are at home.

What it does

We designed an app that helps people to find nearby garbage can, bathroom, and charging stations. As you may find these necessaries can be easily to get access at home, it is not as simple as you were in public area. So iCan app basically provides user with information that they need during urgent moment when they are outdoor.

How we built it

We google drawing to generate icons for garbage can, toilet paper, and battery. We use Goodnote to create our app logo.

Challenges we ran into

When we design our icon, we have to find an app that's able to delete original background and make it transparent. We use LunaPic at first for the Logo, but we later notice that the edge of the logo became blurry after the transparent process was applied. To solve this issue, we switched to Google Drawing because it already has a transparent canvas. It was a challenge to learn React Native

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We proud of brainstorming ideas, working together collaboratively as a team, and executing our idea.

What we learned

We learn how to use google Map API, react native, expo-cli, drawing application.

What's next for iCan

With the limited amount of time, we only implement the garbage can locations on Google Map API because that's the only data set we can find online. Bathroom locations and outlets are relatively hard to get the data. For future improvement, we want to add these two data set on the Map. Another factor we plan to add is statistic board that keep track of user's activity when they use the app. We also consider to add a rating on our app, which allows users to rate each location after they have visited.
