Inspiration

When thinking about the concept for our project, we wanted to make sure it was accessible for the masses. We wanted something that was not intimidating and non-invasive and most importantly, easy to use. Something that every person has in common are bodily functions. There are a lot of biological information that can be derived from fecal sample, which led us to come up with a “smart” toilet that analyzes fecal samples that it comes across and provides a summary of the person’s gut health. The idea is that it is non-invasive, quick, easy to use, and non-imposing. The person does not have to go out of their way to use it, they just have to sit down and do their business. Doing this project taught us how just how much information our bodies hold about our nutrition.

How it works

This device takes advantage of the biological information our bodies relay and translates it into a heavily detailed and comprehensive gut health report, allowing the user to make dietary or nutritional adjustments if they want. This process occurs through the microsensors embedded on the paper and are then transmitted to the tablet attached to the toilet. The user then gets to see and save their information on the mobile application.

What we learned

During our journey of creating this project, we learned a lot about how our nutrition and our health, but also what it would take to create something that would be accepted by the public. Inventions not only need to be functional, but appealing and approachable. Making changes to bathrooms would be like modifying a comfort space for many people, which is why we decided to make sure that it retains all its original functions to give it a sense of familiarity.

Challenges

In general, coming up with something new is a daunting task with so many advancements in technology in our modern world. One of the biggest challenges we faced was figuring out the logistics of something that does not exist yet. A multitude of questions came to us: How would it work?, Would it be accepted?, Is it too unrealistic?. We addressed these questions and modified our project accordingly to make sure that we had something worth presenting. Not only that, coming in as beginners of Figma meant we had a lot of ground to cover in navigating the tool. The weekend was full of learning and discovering new things about the software that allowed us to communicate our idea to people.

Reflection

Looking back, this project helped us about possible innovations in our future. It helped us feel excited for a world where important and accurate information about ourselves would be available at such short notice. Innovation is one of humanity’s greatest qualities and there is no telling where we will end up years and decades down the line.
