Inspiration
One day, one of our team members, Varun, was reading through an online news source. Then he realized that many of these news articles were overwhelming in the sense that he did not know how important each piece was. Ultimately, his realization led us to build Ibis, which is an Android application that color codes the importance of a piece of news.
How it works
We based this application on RSS feeds of certain news sources and the Bing Search API. With the RSS feeds, we populate our database with the title and links of online articles. Utilizing this API, we find the corresponding number of hits to the article on the search engine. Through this variable, we color code the article, where red is the most important and yellow being the least.
Challenges we ran into
We had some trouble while utilizing the Bing Search API. It was a new experience for us all, but we managed to overcome this hurdle with the help of a Microsoft representative.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud to have produced this application as for a majority of us, this is our first hackathon!
What's next for Ibis
- Bringing this feature for Pebble
- Implementing more customizable characteristics, such as location relevance, personal interest, keyword search, and more
