Mandatory Questions

How did your team manage your time effectively and split responsibilities across each team member? The way our team best managed our time effectively was by starting immediately to brainstorm ideas as to what we want to solve and it’s important to our society. By setting clear goals, and pathways of what we want our app to do and be like we were able to identify the difference between dependence, independence and interdependence when working together. Comparatively we did not split up any of the responsibilities instead combined all our tasks and skills accordingly allowing every individual to put a part in every task. Allowing us to form interdependence we were well aware that we could work separately but noticed the potential in combining our ideas allowing us to flourish.

How was your team able to utilize diverse perspectives to create an inclusive app?

Our team was able to utilize diverse perspectives to create an inclusive app because we come from different parts of the world; Nigeria, India, Eritrea/Ethiopia, and America. We each came from diverse backgrounds, values, ideologies and most importantly expectation of the “Dream life”. Despite this our biggest connection was our desire to make that dream life come true. Since we came from different backgrounds it allowed us to have different educational backgrounds bringing new ways of thinking and analyzing problems. Nigeria: Analytical-thinking , problem solving, out-of the box thinking. India: Broad understanding, critical thinking. Ethiopia: Detail-oriented, Analytics, precision. America: Goal-Oriented, enterprising. These skills which are learned and joined from all parts of the world is what allows us to have an inclusive app. We are inclusive.

Our Deeper Meaning Our deeper meaning of joining this competition, to know in life that we made an impact. Even if it was just on a small scale. Our passion is what keeps us going throughout this whole process. Everyone's individual motives do differ but what connects us is that we see a greater future for life, a world where we can only begin to imagine. We built this app on each other's talents and pure imagination. We all are novice programmers but we saw the great potential this app can provide. This is our motivating factor and most importantly that we did our best and left our imprint on the world.

What Set Us Apart What sets us apart from our competitors, is our ability to innovate and our unwavering desire to succeed. Our entire team is dedicated to improving this app/cause even after the competition is over to leave lasting impressions on our community. With this in mind, our entire drive is oriented towards ways we can improve the app to make it more realistic, more efficient and effective for the long term. However, our team is extremely dedicated to and passionate about this competition and that will allow us to stand out from the competition. We are committed to doing the best we can, to improve the future, because the future is in our hands. We were novice programmers, but we learned how to code. We come from different districts, but we found a way to come together, and most importantly we come from different backgrounds, and skills, but we managed to combine them to make something beautiful and we hope you can see that as well.

Inspiration

The larger mission of Iaso is to make healthcare a preventative step, not a subsequent one. Imagine a world where people are not overwhelmed about whether they can afford their medical bills or how long they would have to wait to receive treatment. Iaso is just a small step to solve a much larger issue. It's the ripple effect which can lead to a universal solution. We recognize just how fragile life is, especially when it comes down to those we love. Family, friends, grandparents, and parents, we want to preserve that bond as much as possible.

What it does

The objective of this project is to provide an app that allows alleviation of stress for doctors as well as providing a seamless way for patients to navigate the overwhelming world of ER, Urgent Care, and Doctor's visits. This is done by our symptom checker which provides a basis of percentages which will allow the user to be redirected to ER or Urgent Care based on their needs, reducing the overflux of patients in the ER and minimizing the stress on Emergency Doctors for minor needs. Patients can also research about their condition(s) using our factsheets linked directly to CDC.gov and other credible sources such as UChicago Medicine, lessening the necessary cost of hospital trips for consumers and providing information in an efficient manner. Our app also includes an interactive Google Map that shows all of the hospitals in the RTP region. Users can click on any hospital marker and be taken to the google maps app on their phone, allowing those who need medical attention to receive it in a timely manner.

How we built it

We built Iaso using HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, and JSON. We also acquired the use of an API from ApiMedic that allowed us to build your very own AI powered Symptom Checker with the means to tell you what you have and the likelihood of a certain condition happening, all based on medical professionals from all around the world. We built our app on CodeHS and transferred the files to Visual Studio to transform it into a mobile app.

Challenges we ran into

Despite our immense differences and social backgrounds, we found ways to work interdependently with each other. Our entire group was heavily inexperienced, only knowing how to code in basic python and not having any knowledge about how to build a functioning mobile app. Another issue that we faced was trying to find the time and the location in order to film our pitch video. This is due to the fact that we all live in different areas of the county. However, we managed to get our app coded and our video produced to the highest quality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that despite being novice programmers and app builders, we managed to build a working mobile app that solved a major hidden issue within our community, providing a massive impact on those around us. And most importantly, we built a long-lasting friendship amongst us.

What we learned

During our time with Iaso, we learned the importance of collaboration and the value of soft skills, such as creativity, patience, etc. This is because we found ways to leverage our individual ideas to create something beautiful and this required patience and out-of-the-box creativity. We also learned how to code in other languages, most notably html, css, javascript, json, and API keys, broadening our perspective.

What's next for Iaso - Bridge the Gap

Our future goals of this app is to potentially partner with hospitals. This app can be realistically applied to spread knowledge such as the difference between urgent care and the Emergency care. Provide relief for patients when choosing the best medical plan for their individual needs. Most importantly, save time for healthcare workers. We would also like to integrate MyChart into Iaso in order to provide a hub for all of your personal medical need.
