Inspiration

Inspired by the growing awareness among Gen Z about artificial ingredients like seed oils and Red 40, our app stands offering customizability. Unlike existing apps like Bobby Approved, we allow users to create and enforce their own list of banned ingredients, ensuring they have full control over their dietary choices in a world filled with processed foods.

What it does

Our app quickly analyzes product barcodes and flags ingredients you want to avoid. You can customize the list of flagged ingredients and quickly displays if the product scanned avoids your flagged ingredients.

How I built it

Built using Swift, SwiftUI for the user interface and VisionKit to scan barcodes and handle camera operations.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was being able to handle barcode analysis in the camera and implementing vision kit within our UI and model. Automatic detection of barcodes and 3d overlays on camera inputs helped us with this implementation.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

This was our first ever app on Swift! Learning a language for the first time during an active project that if fully fleshed out I would personally use and see value in is incredibly motivating.

What I learned

Aside from learning fundamental Swift syntax, this was the first time using a language that uses MVVM model for UI applications.

What's next for iApprove

Next is implementing a more feature friendly UI and future use of this technology to scan for Kosher requirements and ingredients that target medical conditions.
