Inspiration
Emergenciz was born out of a simple but urgent need: safety. I realized that in critical moments—when someone feels unsafe, is being followed, or faces a medical emergency—pulling out a phone and making a call isn’t always possible. People needed a faster, more reliable way to reach those they trust most. Driven by real stories of domestic violence, missing children, and everyday safety concerns, Emergenciz was created to put help just one shake or tap away. It’s more than an app—it’s peace of mind, built to protect you and the people you love when every second counts.
What it does
Emergenciz is a personal safety app that helps you get help instantly in emergencies. With just four shakes of your phone or a single tap, the app sends a notification alert with your live location to your trusted contacts. Whether you’re walking home at night, traveling alone, or facing a medical emergency, Emergenciz makes sure your loved ones know where you are and can respond quickly. Your location is shared only during emergencies, keeping your privacy protected at all times. One shake. One tap. Instant help.
How we built it
Emergenciz is built with a modern, scalable tech stack to ensure speed, reliability, and security when it matters most. The mobile app is developed in React Native with Expo, allowing for a smooth, cross-platform experience on both iOS and Android. On the backend, Emergenciz uses Express.js to handle requests efficiently, while MongoDB provides a flexible and secure database for managing user data and trusted contacts. This stack ensures that alerts are processed in real time and location data is delivered instantly—because during an emergency, every second counts.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges in building Emergenciz was fine-tuning the gesture parameters for the shake detection. I needed it to be sensitive enough to trigger quickly in an emergency, but not so sensitive that everyday movements would send false alerts. After testing different thresholds and motion patterns, we found the right balance that makes the feature both reliable and user-friendly. Another challenge was integrating the RevenueCat paywall for our offer. I wanted the payment flow to be smooth, secure, and consistent across iOS and Android. Configuring subscriptions, lifetime access, and making sure the paywall displayed correctly took some extra work, but the end result is a simple and seamless experience for users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fast & Reliable Emergency Alerts – Built a system that delivers live location alerts to trusted contacts within seconds.
- Smart Shake Detection – Successfully configured motion gesture parameters to ensure accurate shake-to-alert triggers without false alarms.
- Cross-Platform Launch – Delivered a smooth mobile experience on both iOS and Android using React Native and Expo.
- Seamless Paywall Integration – Implemented RevenueCat for secure payments and lifetime access offers across platforms.
- Privacy-First Design – Ensured that location data is shared only in emergencies, protecting user privacy at all times.
- User-Centered Experience – Created an intuitive, one-shake-or-tap interface so anyone can use it instantly under stress. ## What we learned Building Emergenciz taught me the importance of balancing simplicity, reliability, and sensitivity. I learned how critical it is to fine-tune small technical details—like shake gesture parameters—because in real emergencies, false triggers can confuse users while missed triggers can cost valuable seconds. We also discovered how important it is to design with privacy and trust at the center. Users want to feel safe, but they also want full control over when and how their location is shared. Finally, we learned that implementing tools like RevenueCat is more than just payments—it’s about creating a smooth, stress-free user journey so people can focus on what really matters: safety. ## What's next for Emergenciz Now that Emergenciz is built, my next focus is spreading the word. Safety apps are only powerful if the people who need them most know they exist. That’s why I am launching a targeted marketing strategy that includes:
- Social Media Campaigns on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to show real-life use cases in short, relatable videos.
- Partnerships with Safety & Wellness Influencers to reach communities who value personal security.
- Awareness Campaigns tied to causes like domestic violence prevention, campus safety, and travel security.
- App Store Optimization (ASO) and search marketing so people can easily find Emergenciz when they need it most.
- Community Outreach with universities, local organizations, and nonprofits that focus on safety and prevention.
