Inspiration
With applications looking neater and neater every day, reddit.com is an eyesore if you do not have RES installed
What it does
Provides feature parity with the current Reddit ios application. Allowing user to view, edit, create and comment on threads
How we built it
Being javascript is the king of all languages we decided to build our application using react and making API requests to Reddit to grab the data we needed to display. Becuase we did not want to build a traditional website or single page application, we opted to build a hybrid desktop application using Github's electron framework that utilizes chromes v8 engine and node js to give users a desktop application feel while allowing developers to write in web languages.
Challenges we ran into
Being an angular developer and trying out React for the first time was a little bit of a hurdle. It took a little bit to pick up on some of the strong suits and different styles of react. Having 36 hours to build a full-fledged app is never an easy task, but I felt that the caffeine kept us powering through.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were very pleased with how our application turned out. We had little faith near the middle of the weekend but things really pulled through on the final day. At the time of writing, we are 32 hours into the weekend and have only slept for 1.5 hours so some would say that is an accomplishment.
What we learned
We all learned valuable skills this weekend. Coming into the project Austin had no experience with web-based projects and by the end up the weekend felt fairly comfortable contributing to the project. Lexi learned that learning new technologies is "rip-your-hair-out" worthy and Ross learned that he is still capable of pulling all-nighters when need be.
What's next for IActuallyReddit
I use Reddit on the daily, having tons of chrome extensions installed to make my viewing experience pleasurable is a nuisance, I will be happy to beta test this app, add features as I need them and share it with friends, colleagues and family members
