I_POWDER: Enhancing Textual Integrity
Inspiration
Over the decades of participation and watching individuals spend time in reviewing written documents to detect words or phrases that are incorrect for the document’s requirements, was inspirational to find develop an app that would give back time to individuals was extremely motivating. As an Editor, the need to streamline the process of reviewing documents for politically incorrect words, offensive language, or outdated nomenclature is a primary mandated responsibility for editorial duties criteria for publication. Similarly, the efforts performed by peer reviewers would benefit from an app such as I_Powder. Furthermore, the inspiration for I_POWDER came from the challenges faced by authors, reviewers, editors, students, teachers, and instructors in ensuring the sensitivity and appropriateness of text. By automating this meticulous process, I_POWDER aims to restore the valuable commodity of time back to creativity and intellectual exploration.
What It Does
I_POWDER serves as an innovative tool designed to scan written documents for words or phrases that are deemed inappropriate or offensive within a given context. By detecting and labeling such content, I_POWDER facilitates the removal of these elements, replacing them with a [REDACTED] marker. This allows authors to substitute the identified terms with more appropriate language, ensuring that the document aligns with current cultural values and linguistic norms. I_POWDER's versatility extends to various settings, adapting to language, reading level, accessibility requirements, and cultural values based on geographical location.
How I Built It
Our development journey was fueled by a combination of advanced AI technologies and iterative testing. Utilizing Claude, an optimized AI model for scientific and academic writing, ensured that I_POWDER produced analytical outputs without biases. The integration of PartyRock’ s double input system was critical, enabling the app to filter outputs effectively, identify redactions, and recommend actions. Through a process of remixing, I carried out simultaneous testing and review, refining my approach to achieve the best possible user experience.
Challenges Faced
The path to creating I_POWDER was not without its obstacles. Ensuring the tool's adaptability across different languages and cultural contexts presented a significant challenge. Balancing sensitivity with accuracy required finetuning of AI models and communication with diverse user feedback. Additionally, addressing the technical complexities of integrating double input systems and optimizing AI for language detection tested problem-solving skills and technical expertise.
Achievements
Over the course of this project, several achievements included testing over 20+ prompts, learning how to utilize a double input strategy for optimizing PartyRock outputs, learning how to remix (clone) my own PartyRock apps to better test numerous development patterns and prompts while I was in development, and comparing numerous AI models and ultimately identifying Claude as the optimal model for academic and scientific work. The biggest achievement overall, for me, was coding my very first app on PartyRock while identifying an industry-specific use-case of AI that I can see myself continuing after the hackathon.
What I Learned
This project was a mission of both technical and personal growth. I delved deep into AI and natural language processing, gaining insights into the intricacies of model optimization and user-centric design. On a broader scale, I learned the importance of linguistic sensitivity and inclusivity in respectful digital communication. I_POWDER teaches that technology, when thoughtfully applied, has the ability to foster a more considerate and understanding world.
Next Steps
As I look forward, a major goal is to expand I_POWDER's range of influence and impact. Engaging with academic institutions, healthcare providers, businesses, and the publishing industries, I look ahead to enhancing the I_Powder tool further and explore new applications. With plans for a public beta, I_POWDER is set to revolutionize the approach to textual integrity in digital communications.
Let's connect and explore how we can make digital spaces safer and more inclusive for everyone.
