You wake up as a fly, starving and searching for food, learning to fly through an enormous world where spiders are suddenly much bigger than before. Can you survive in this game?

Inspiration

The main inspiration was my desire to create something simple, fun, and tense, while also letting players experience something impossible in real life. Shrinking down, flying, and transforming into a fly felt like a playful way to explore a new perspective.

What it does

I Was the Fly is a simple game where the player becomes a fly, searches for food, and tries to survive in an environment full of spiders. The focus is on accessibility and intuitive controls, with flying handled through a single trigger press so anyone can start playing immediately.

How we built it

My main goal was to create a virtual space that does not restrict player movement. Slightly abstract, particle-based planes are used to enhance the feeling of flight and freedom. Looking back, one of the most important features was adding haptic feedback during landing, collisions, and dangerous encounters. These small physical responses greatly strengthen immersion.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was tuning the spider’s movement and hunting behavior so it felt alive and threatening without becoming unfair. Another interesting challenge was exploring ways to reduce motion sickness and make flying in VR comfortable for longer play sessions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am most satisfied with the overall feel of flying and with small details that add personality to the experience, such as the droppings the fly leaves behind after each landing.

What we learned

I learned how to design flying mechanics for virtual reality and how to simplify interactions so they are immediately accessible and understandable.

What's next for I Was the Fly

The next step is expanding the game with new content, including additional levels and fresh gameplay ideas.
