Inspiration

When brainstorming ideas for a project related to "the future," themes that frequently came up included technology/AI, space, and climate change. Our submission, a game, combines these ideas.

Facing the collapse of Earth, citizens line up for interrogation to demonstrate their humanness and earn their spot on a spaceship to a nearby habitable planet. The player is in charge of administering questions about the human experience but must be careful who is admitted onto the spaceship since a spot for a bot means one spot less for a human.

What It Does

Our game is a visual novel. It is story-driven and revolves around a series of interviews. The player must independently determine which candidates to accept and which to turn away, without the ability to juxtapose candidates or "take back" a decision.

How We Built It

Our game was built using the Godot game engine. The assets were made using Pixelorama and the audio voices were made with ElevenLabs.

To make the candidate (people/bot) assets, we generated images on "This Person Does Not Exist," a website that makes human faces with AI. We also blurred, pixelated, and removed the background of these images.

We carefully generated and adjusted voices for each character using ElevenLabs' AI voice generator to find audio with the right emotion and feel for our game. We had a lot of fun and good laughs messing around with the different settings and experimenting with different sounds.

We used the Dialogic plugin to create the dialogues for our game.

Challenges We Ran Into

Abby and Charlotte had never worked with Godot before, this was Matheus' first hackathon, and Kaitlin had other weekend obligations she had to balance with the hackathon. We ran into a few challenges merging our work, but collaboration was otherwise pretty seamless.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

Our game is simple but complete. We did not overscope and tackled just enough. We are proud that we were able to deliver a working game.

What We Learned

ElevenLabs was a new tool to all of us. We found it pretty intuitive to use. It was cool to learn about the use of AI in speech generation.

What's Next

We plan to continue development of our game by adding even more candidates to interview to make the game have more replay value and adding additional mini games to supplement the primary visual novel style, both to further highlight the human experience.
