Inspiration

In today's autopilot world of meal prep and groceries delivered to our door at the press of a button, we've forgotten the art of thinking for ourselves and how to feed ourselves without relying on an AI completely. When we order groceries, we blindly trust that what we've been given are fresh and healthy because we don't know anymore what to look for in a fresh produce. The same concept goes for meal prep. As generations come and go, this problem will only progress further.

I Know My Food was built to close that gap a little. To teach people who want to learn how to cook/ shop on their own for the first time/ what to look for when picking up. It encourages the person to think for themselves and use their sensory, visual and touch.

What it does

I Know My Food is an AI companion that works with the user who's decided to cook a dish on their own for the first time/ extremely long time and for that user who has never grocery shopped before (Young children/ young adults absorbed in hustle culture). They can input a recipe link or a dish and then converse with the AI who will also "see" the groceries with them and help them pick. The AI is not trained to blindly them what to pick but also to let them know what they need to be looking out for before making their final choice.

How we built it

I built it using Gemini 3.1 pro, Google Gemini Live API, Google Vertex AI, Google GenAI Python SDK (google-genai), Google Cloud Run, Google Cloud Firestore (Firebase Admin SDK), Google Artifact Registry, Google Cloud IAM (Identity and Access Management):

Challenges we ran into

The session kept timing out after one ingredient was picked.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A working prototype

What we learned

I learnt how to use Google GenAI Python SDK (google-genai), Google Cloud Firestore (Firebase Admin SDK) and Google Cloud Run

What's next for I Know My Food

I will be incorporating an AI agent with a character, integrating a diary feature where users can keep a track of what they've learnt how to cook
