Inspiration

We made a game that is about discrimination in the workplace. We are a group of young, diverse women from West Virginia where everyday we put up with discrimination in our lives due to who we are and where we live. Like us, many people get discriminated against because of their race, gender, or sexuality. This game is being made to teach people to be aware of the social injustice that is happening specifically to women.

What it does

This game works by allowing the player to make their own choices and live out a story that faces common obstacles for a black woman in the workplace. We built this by first writing a storyline tree that mapped out the different obstacles that she will be facing. Next we, started working on the character sprites and the script for the game. Finally, we pulled this all together with the code.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into is not being able to think of ideas for the project, figuring out the names for our characters and how to respond to user answers. We also found issues writing a complex and interesting story line that described all of the injustice issues. We wrote a long script and hand trouble putting it all together in a timely manner. Our story was very complex and was hard to write out in the time given.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

We have many accomplishments from today that we are proud of. For instance, we are proud of how much we got done today and how well we communicated with each other. We are proud that focuses on an issue that affects us personally in our lives. Also we are proud of the story line we made and came up with and how we are combatting an issue that is central to our lives and important to us.

What we learned

We learned that empowerment is an important subject for people in often powerless situations. These people need to learn to take that power back, and this game will teach them steps that they can take to do this. We have learned a lot about scratch and putting together a game. Our group did a chatbot for change contest. This has been a learning experience for us having never putting a game like this together. We hit a lot of obstacles that we were unfamiliar with but, we learned how to overcome them.

What's next for I Exist

What's next for "I Exist" is updating the game so that instead of just having a woman of color as the main character, we could have other choices, such as people of other races, sexualities, genders, or minority religious groups. We would've done so with more time, and we will definitely continue to work on it outside of the Hackathon.
