Inspiration

In Singapore, a vibrant and diverse society, the strength of our community lies in our ability to communicate and understand one another, regardless of our backgrounds. However, this diversity also presents unique challenges, especially for the elderly who speak various dialects and for the hearing-impaired community. Inspired by the need to foster stronger social bonds and ensure that no one is left behind, we developed i-Connect.

What it does

i-Connect is an innovative software solution that bridges language and communication gaps between elderly residents who speak various dialects and volunteers or caregivers who primarily speak English. Additionally, it empowers hearing-impaired individuals by enabling seamless communication with the broader community. i-Connect helps to strengthen Social Defence in Singapore by fostering understanding and connection among different communities.

How we built it

We built i-Connect by integrating advanced technologies such as natural language processing, speech recognition, and sign language detection. Our development process involved extensive research and experimentation with various tools and frameworks to create a robust and effective solution. The project was developed using Python, Flask, and various machine learning models trained to handle different dialects and sign language inputs.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we faced was the technical difficulty of integrating multiple languages and dialects into a cohesive system. Additionally, handling sign language recognition required careful consideration and sensitivity to ensure accuracy and respect for the language. We also encountered obstacles in optimizing the performance of the application to handle real-time translations effectively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed a solution that can genuinely make a difference in people's lives, particularly those who face communication barriers due to language differences or hearing impairments. The successful integration of multiple technologies to create a seamless user experience is a significant achievement. We are also proud of our contribution to fostering social cohesion in Singapore.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned the importance of empathy in technology development. Understanding the needs and challenges of our target users was crucial in shaping the direction of i-Connect. We also gained valuable experience in working with complex technologies such as natural language processing and sign language detection, which will benefit us in future projects.

What's next for i-Connect

Looking forward, we plan to enhance i-Connect by expanding its language capabilities to include more dialects and languages spoken in Singapore. We also aim to improve the accuracy and speed of the sign language detection feature. Additionally, we hope to collaborate with local organizations to deploy i-Connect in communities where it can have the most significant impact.
