Inspiration

We realized that many people walk around carrying heavy emotional burdens they feel they can’t tell anyone—not friends, not family, not even therapists. Existing platforms are noisy, unsafe, or expose too much personal information. We wanted to build a space where someone can say, “I’m not okay,” without fear of judgment, exposure, or harm. That spark became I Can’t Tell Anyone—a platform anchored in anonymity, empathy, and AI-supported emotional safety.

What it does

I Can’t Tell Anyone is a privacy-first peer-support platform where users can:

  • Join supportive group channels around shared struggles
  • Connect 1:1 through peer support requests
  • Get instantly paired with anonymous users facing similar challenges
  • Explore an uplifting, positivity-only feed
  • Access a curated marketplace of wellness resources
  • Stay protected through real-time AI safety, PII redaction, and crisis detection It’s social connection—but rebuilt for emotional safety.

How we built it

We mainly used Claude Code to build it.

  • Frontend: React Native + Tailwind for a clean, calming mobile interface
  • Backend: Node.js + secure WebSockets for messaging
  • E2EE Messaging: Custom encryption layer inspired by Signal’s protocol
  • AI Safety Layer: On-device models for PII detection, sentiment tracking, and red-flag behaviors
  • Matching Engine: Vector-based emotional embedding + topic clustering
  • Moderation Pipeline: Hybrid AI-human system with explicit-consent escalation

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing anonymity with accountability—protecting users while preventing harm
  • Running AI on-device with limited compute, without hurting UX
  • Designing E2EE in a system that still needs safety signals
  • Creating a positive-only content feed without sounding artificial or overly filtered
  • Emotionally sensitive UX decisions around crisis handling and consent

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building real-time PII redaction that feels invisible and natural
  • Creating an anonymous matching experience that is safe, warm, and stigma-free
  • Designing a safety pipeline that respects autonomy while preventing harm
  • Developing an interface people immediately described as comforting
  • Turning a difficult social problem into a functioning, privacy-safe platform
  • Most importantly—we built something that could genuinely help someone feel less alone.

What we learned

  • Emotional design is just as important as technical design
  • Safety tools must be empathetic, not punitive
  • Users trust systems that protect them without surveilling them
  • AI works best as a quiet guardian, not a judge
  • Building for vulnerability requires deep ethical consideration

What's next for I can't tell anyone

  • Voice-based anonymous support with emotion-aware safety
  • Global crisis routing based on location (without revealing identity)
  • Community-led positive content creation
  • Clinician partnerships for escalation pathways
  • Gamified well-being journeys to promote positive coping skills
  • Open API for mental health organizations to integrate safe peer-support channels

We’re just beginning—and we want this platform to become a lifeline for anyone who has ever felt they had to stay silent.
