Inspiration

This project can help thousands of millions of people to solve their mental health problem, caused by this Covid-19 epidemic, via social media platform, which minimize the manpower, but maximize help people.

When Covid-19 spreads all over the world, people post and forward all the related information on social media, the information is spreading quite fast, more and more Covid-19 related information rushes in people’s eyes, especially when people are isolated. The information spreads negative emotion to the entire population on social media, people start to feel concern, fear, panic, some even worse cases are people suicide to escape this epidemic.

Mental health is quite important but easily to be overlooked when we fight the disease. Social media is a really good platform to spread positive information when people feel concern, fear, panic to avoid people get into even worse mental health situation.

What it does

This project detects social media users’ negative emotion based on what they read, forward, make comments on social media. Social media triggers professional positive psychology knowledge base on level of users’ negative emotion to avoid users get down deeply in the negative emotion, such as concern, fear, panic, even suicide. When people receive more and more positive information based on their own case, the concern, fear, panic will reduce or even disappear.

Social media will keep detecting users’ emotion, when users’ emotion change to positive, social media also encourages people, who get the professional positive psychology knowledge, to share the positive psychology knowledge on social media. In that case, more and more people can receive more and more positive information on social media. If social media detect users’ emotion keep negative, and becomes more and more serious negative, the social media will bridge the user and online professional psychologist, after having the users’ consent.

How I built it

First, this project extracts text key words from what people read, forward, make comment on social media.

Second, use machine learning to work on the sentiment analysis, the result can show whether people are in positive, neutral, negative emotion, also the level of negative emotion.

Third, if we detect the user is in negative emotion, social media will trigger professional positive psychology knowledge to this user, based on the user’s level of negative emotion.

Fourth, keep detecting the users’ emotion based on what they read, forward, make comment on social media.

Fifth, when we detect the users’ emotion change to positive, social media will trigger congratulation message to the users, and encourage them to share those professional positive psychology knowledge on social media to help other people.

Sixth, if we keep detecting the users’ emotion, and find some users’ emotion becomes more and more serious negative, the social media will bridge the online professional psychological counseling to the users, after having the users’ consent.

Challenges I ran into

A big challenge for this project is to cooperate with professional psychologist. There are some points for us to preview:

(1) If we detect the a user’s emotion is negative, what professional positive psychology knowledge should be triggered based on the user’s negative emotion level. We need to create a large psychology knowledge database to support this trigger action.

(2) If we keep detecting one user’s emotion, and find the user’s emotion becomes more and more serious negative, the social media will try to bridge online psychological counseling to the user. In this case, we need some professional psychologist to support our project, and provide online counseling when needed.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

One thing I am quite proud of this project is we can help thousands of millions of people to solve their mental health problem, caused by this Covid-19 epidemic, via social media platform, which minimize the manpower, but help maximize population.

What I learned

A good social media platform will be interactive with users in the future, cooperate with experts in different areas will be needed.

What's next for I can feel your emotion, help you before trouble comes

This is a concept project, the first thing for next step is try to set up the project with real data. Then we should validate the performance of the model to check whether the model can really help users or not, then update the model to a better one.
