Inspiration

In today’s fast-paced world, many couples struggle to stay emotionally connected due to busy schedules, long work hours, and constant digital distractions. Over time, the small everyday moments that once built intimacy slowly disappear. This often leads to emotional distance, loneliness within relationships, and weakened bonds.

LoveHour was inspired by the idea that love is built in the small moments, not just big conversations. We wanted to create a simple, intentional way for couples to stay emotionally present in each other’s lives—without pressure, without comparison, and without endless messaging.

What It Does

LoveHour is a private connection app designed exclusively for couples. While both partners are awake, they receive hourly prompts to share: • One real-time photo (camera only, no uploads) • One short caption explaining the moment

This creates a living timeline of each partner’s day, helping couples: • Feel emotionally present even when physically apart • Build trust through authenticity • Reduce feelings of loneliness • Strengthen emotional intimacy through consistency

There is no social feed, no likes, no followers—only a private shared space between two people.

How I Built It

• Frontend: React Native with Expo, programmed in TypeScript
• Backend: Firebase (Authentication, Firestore Database, and Storage)
• Authentication: Secure email sign-up and login, with Google account sign-in as an option
• Camera Integration: Enforced real-time image capture only to prevent gallery uploads
• Cloud Storage: All media is stored securely using Firebase Storage with strict security rules
• Private Couple Pairing System: Built using a personalized account code system stored in Firestore, allowing partners to match securely through unique pairing codes

The system triggers hourly prompts only during awake hours and synchronizes all updates in real time between partners.

Challenges We Ran Into

• Users being unable to update while asleep, which led to the creation of a Goodnight/Goodmorning system that pauses hourly updates automatically overnight
• Configuring Firebase security rules properly to ensure privacy and data protection
• Debugging multiple Firestore and Storage permission issues
• Testing cross-platform functionality on both Android and iOS devices using Expo Go and the iOS Simulator
• Ensuring consistent real-time synchronization across different network conditions

Accomplishments That I am Proud of

• Built a fully functional real-time couple connection system
• Successfully tested the app with real users—including my girlfriend—who genuinely loved the experience
• Fully connected the frontend and backend without spending any money on API tokens or services
• Designed an app that actively promotes emotional wellness and healthy relationships
• Delivered a working prototype within the hackathon deadline

What We Learned

• Emotional products require trust-based design
• Simplicity outperforms feature overload
• Small, consistent habits create stronger engagement than occasional deep interactions
• Privacy-first design is essential in relationship-focused tech
• Users value authentic moments more than perfection

What’s Next for LoveHour

• Based on strong enthusiasm from friends and family, I plan to further refine LoveHour and ship it to both the App Store and Google Play Store
• Seek external mentorship and professional guidance to scale the product properly
• Bring on a collaborator with a strong UI/UX background to optimize the experience for ease of use
• Add AI-based emotional insights to help couples better understand communication and connection patterns
