Inspiration

It has been almost a year and a half since Covid-19 began battering families across the world—rocking many to their very core. For the most part, we've focused on the effects Covid has had on adults: putting parents out of work, shrouding homes in grief and loss; but what about our kids?

Shuttering children out of schools and moving to remote learning has led to devastating social effects. But many children have found their rescue in the world of gaming. Kids all around the world are finding more friends online and becoming fast users of social games like Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox.

What it does

We're HypePerks, an online rewards platform for parents and caretakers of kids who love to game. ​​We help kids rock their daily routines. Parents can set tasks, rewards and monitor them all in real time. We empower and motivate kids to be the best that they can be.

How we built it

We developed the application using a suite of fullstack technologies and cloud hosting software. For the frontend we utilized React.js framework along with Chakra UI to build out our forms.

Challenges we ran into

It was challenging to create an idea that resonated with current times. Technical Challenges: Adjusting the backend handle to date and time format according to specific tasks. Connecting front-end + back-end due to lack of time

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the accomplishments we made just being a three member team. This was our first time working together and we cooperated using our individual skills and provided constructive feedback to each other. We are also proud of the growth potential of our application. We were lucky enough to do user research before we started, and received a lot of positive feedback.

What we learned

We learned that during the pandemic, the gaming industry exploded exponentially. In fact, Roblox, a favorite among children aged 9–12 in the United States, reported an average of 31.1 million users per day during most of 2020—an increase of 82% over the year before. We found similar stats with other gaming companies.

We also gained a better understanding of digital payments.

What's next for HypePerks

With HypePerks, we understand the best way to motivate a child is to tap into their curiosity and reward their efforts. For a child that's curious about space, imagine being able to give them a telescope to learn how many moons Saturn has. For a child interested in soccer, imagine being able to bring them to a game to find their favorite player position. And for the child that enjoys building things, imagine being able to gift them a robot to learn how a circuit works—providing suggestive tasks in line with their children's interest. Creative tasks are the future of HypePerks.
