We were inspired to make this application by the recent boom in stock market activity which happened due to GameStop stocks skyrocketing in price. Our application searches certain subreddits for keywords(stock and crypto tickers) and how many times they were mentioned in the past 24 hours, thus measuring the recent hype. We built the application with python, django, postgresql, reddit API, javascript and html. Python did the searching with the help of reddit's API for easy access to online posts and the time they were posted. The keywords for searching were specified in .csv files and the results first were at first displayed in a console. After lots of research we managed to set up a website and push the data through all the way from python to the local website. Then some adjustments were made as to how the local website looks and then we decided that this was a good time to end the development for now. We ran into many challenges. Some databases were in the wrong format so there was a good amount of time invested in reformatting those, not including the time it took us to find them, lots of debugging was done within python as many things didn't want to work the way we wanted them to or they just didn't work at all. Setting up a local website to display data was hard as we had to combine different technologies to make it all work. We're proud of the fact that the application works as intended and that we learned a lot of new things throughout this hackathon, including work with web design, utilising API's and technologies for displaying data on the website. We are planning of including extra features for a premium: live data like stock graphs, timeframe selection for the graphs(1D, 5D ,1W ,1M...) and other analytical data, but before that, a good idea would be to monetise the website with ads and make it an actual online website with a domain.
