Inspiration
Finding local ocean conservation events is genuinely hard. We wanted a way to hook people into caring about the ocean through personality — like MBTI but for marine life.
What it does
HYML assigns you one of 16 ocean animal personalities, shows you real Scripps Institution of Oceanography Argo float data about your animal's habitat, then connects you to local marine conservation events. You join your species group, attend events, earn echo points, and compete on a leaderboard.
How we built it
React frontend on Vercel, Node/Express backend on Railway, Supabase for auth and database, EasyOneArgo dataset from Scripps via the Argovis API for live ocean data visualization.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating live Argovis API data, building the MBTI-style scoring system with 16 animal types, and deploying a full-stack app in 36 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A fully deployed app with real Scripps ocean data, 16 animal personality types, live Argo float map, and a working event attendance system.
What we learned
How to work with oceanographic data APIs and build a full-stack product under time pressure.
What's next for HYML
Partner with real conservation organizations to post verified events, expand to more ocean regions using global Argo data.
