We wanted to make a project that could help people stay safe and informed about COVID-19, and learn a lot along the way!

What it does

HyGenie allows the user to set their home and receive various notifications, whether it be a reminder to wear a mask when going outside, or washing their hands when getting back home. The app itself links users to grocery options and gives them helpful tips on personal protective equipment. As shown in the video, as soon as the user is about to pull out of the driveway, he got an intelligent notification to wear a mask. As soon as he pulled back into the driveway, get got another intelligent notification reminding him to wash his hands.

How we built it

We built HyGenie using Flutter and Android Studios. We used APIs and plugins like geolocation to allow users to receive location-based notifications to keep them safe!

Challenges we ran into

For three of the four creators of HyGenie, it was their first ever Hackathon and first ever time using Flutter to program an application. Getting accustomed to these new tools and learning how to use them to create a product definitely served as a challenge. Also, none of us had ever worked with location-based services before either.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have created a working application despite the many challenges we faced and we had a lot of fun along the way!

What we learned

We learned a lot about time management, dividing up work, and using GitHub. We also learned to integrate location-based services into a product and also how to code applications using Flutter!

What's next for HyGenie

In the future, we hope to release HyGenie so that users can benefit from its cool features. We also plan to keep working to improve HyGenie with a better UI and more services to help everyday people in these tough times. Our next step is to integrate ML or AI to help the app determine if the user has been at a potential COVID hotspot, then will notify the user accordingly. We also want to add functionality to locate the closest testing centers.

Other info: The apk is too large for the 35 MB limit, so it is in the Github Repo.
