Inspiration
In Australia, only 56% of international student graduates do land a job in their field or are jobless. This problem is very personal to beUnique because all members of the team had their own struggles with job hunting in Australia. When we first arrived in Australia, our time was harder than expected as my career opportunities were limited due to allowed working hours, the job market was new and career advisors could only provide generic advice. However, at the end of our studies, we met some other international students who achieved way more than we even though we were putting efforts. They achieved more than us because they simply made better decisions from day one in Australia. I should have known these insights as well.
What it does
Through this web app, our team will map out paths of successful former students to guide and customise paths for new international students in Australia. This will be done by gathering data from students and people in the industry in order to generate a similarity index between the two. Based on the level of similarity top 5 pathways/branches will be presented to the user with an option to display more pathways for an additional fee. In other words, paths taken by industry professionals most similar to the customer will be illustrated in the form of interactive visualisation. This will constitute a map and a list of suggestions an international student could take to achieve their own goals. We will be using machine learning to learn from these suggestions and tailor recommendations for different people. Machine learning will also be used in clustering industry professionals based on their personality traits.
How I built it
Mapping out the idea and brainstorming each aspect of it was done on Miro and the prototype design was built in Figma. The final pitch video was edited and made using Audio Edition and Final Cut and Davinci Resolve.
Challenges I ran into
Our idea initially targeted high school students and we later pivoted into a new audience. This was a pain point for all of us and the idea then stemmed from a wish to have known something earlier.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are a very diverse team with 5 members from 5 different countries but we still communicated our ideas very well to each other. Because of amazing communication skills, we met all the deadlines for all our checkpoints way before. In the middle of the hackathon, we also decided to modify our idea and were confident to pull that across feels like the biggest achievement out of all.
What I learned
We learnt how to take an idea from scratch and make it into something tangible. We also learnt and developed an appreciation for how to take challenges head-on and take risks. The most important learning was getting together with strangers, becoming friends with them and working on something absolutely new together.
What's next for beUnique
We will have to first approach professionals to obtain data for our AI algorithm, find mentors and gather data from other sources such as LinkedIn. A beta test will then be released to receive customer feedback and then we will approach universities to form a partnership and promote our services to their students.
