Inspiration
Hydroponic farming enables crops to be grown in a controlled environment, but maintaining the right nutrient and water conditions requires continuous monitoring and frequent manual intervention.
We wanted to build a system that could make hydroponic cultivation smarter, more automated, connected, and sustainable. This led us to combine IoT, solar power, automated control, and machine learning into a single compact hydroponic platform.
Our goal was not just to monitor the crop, but to create a system that can sense the growing conditions, make decisions, automate actions, and estimate crop yield.
What it does
HydroNova AI is an IoT-based, solar-powered hydroponic system that provides real-time monitoring, automated control, and early crop-yield estimation.
The system uses a Raspberry Pi Zero W as the central controller and collects data from:
- NPK sensor
- pH sensor
- Temperature sensor
- Turbidity sensor
- Plant height
- Growth duration
The collected data is processed by the Raspberry Pi and used for monitoring and automated decision-making.
The system controls:
- Nutrient pump
- Water pump
- Solenoid valve
The Raspberry Pi Zero W also provides Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing sensor and crop data to be monitored through an IoT/cloud dashboard.
For yield estimation, we use Linear Regression with NPK, pH, temperature, plant height, and growth duration as input parameters.
$$ Y = b_0 + b_1X_1 + b_2X_2 + b_3X_3 + b_4X_4 + b_5X_5 $$
This provides an early estimated crop yield before harvest.
How we built it
We designed HydroNova AI around the Raspberry Pi Zero W because of its compact size, low power consumption, built-in Wi-Fi, Python support, and multiple communication interfaces.
The system follows this architecture:

Crop-Yield Estimation
We used Python for sensor acquisition, data processing, automation, and the initial prediction model. The NPK sensor communicates through RS485, using an RS485-to-TTL converter with the Raspberry Pi.
The system combines real-time sensor data with plant-growth information to provide monitoring, automated control, and yield estimation.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was integrating multiple sensors, actuators, IoT communication, data processing, and crop-yield estimation into a single low-power platform.
We also had to work with different sensor communication requirements and integrate them with the Raspberry Pi while maintaining a reliable data-processing and control workflow.
Another challenge was the limited number of harvest cycles available for validating the prediction model. Because of this limitation, we present the machine-learning output as an estimated/predicted yield rather than making unsupported claims about prediction accuracy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of bringing several technologies together into one compact agricultural system.
Our key accomplishments include:
Building a solar-powered hydroponic platform
Integrating multiple real-time water-quality sensors
Using Raspberry Pi Zero W as a compact IoT controller
Implementing automated control using pumps and a solenoid valve
Establishing IoT connectivity for remote monitoring
Integrating crop-yield estimation into the system
Creating a complete pipeline from sensing to prediction
The biggest accomplishment is the integration of:
Solar Power + IoT + Real-Time Monitoring + Automation + Yield Estimation
into a single system.
What we learned
This project gave us practical experience in IoT, embedded systems, sensor integration, RS485 communication, automation, solar-powered system design, data processing, and machine learning.
We learned that building an intelligent agricultural system is not simply about collecting sensor readings. The real challenge is connecting the complete workflow:
Sensing → Processing → Decision-Making → Automation → Prediction
We also learned the importance of validating machine-learning models with sufficient real-world data and avoiding unsupported performance claims when experimental data is limited.
What's next for HydroNova AI
Our next step is to collect larger real-world datasets across multiple crop-growth cycles. This will allow us to improve and properly validate the crop-yield prediction model.
We plan to explore:
Larger and more diverse datasets
Additional crop-growth parameters
More advanced machine-learning models
Longer-term system validation
Improved automated nutrient management
Enhanced IoT analytics and visualization
Further optimization of solar-powered operation
Our long-term vision is to develop a hydroponic platform that can continuously sense its environment, intelligently manage resources, predict crop production, and operate with minimal manual intervention.
