HydroMind-X: Water Intelligence for AI-Era Data Centers
Inspiration
AI is thirsty. Every model training run, every inference cluster, every hyperscale buildout leans on evaporative cooling to keep chips from melting — and that cooling runs on water. At the same time, a growing share of India's data center growth is landing in regions that are already water-stressed: Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, cities where groundwater tables are falling and municipal supply is rationed in summer months.
What struck us wasn't that data centers use water — everyone knows that. It's that almost nobody outside the facility itself can see how much, how urgently, or how responsibly. Water usage effectiveness (WUE) numbers show up in sustainability reports once a year. Meanwhile the actual decision — "should we run the evaporative towers hard today, or hold back?" — happens invisibly, hour by hour, with no audit trail and no single number anyone can act on.
We wanted to build the thing that was missing: a live, auditable answer to the question "how much water can we responsibly use right now?"
What it does
HydroMind-X is an AI-driven water intelligence and continuous-auditing platform for sustainable data centers. It fuses live IoT sensor data — temperature, humidity, water level, flow rate, and reservoir status — with weather forecasts into a single Water Availability Index (WAI), scored 0–100.
Conceptually, the WAI is a weighted composite of normalized scarcity indicators:
As the WAI drops, HydroMind-X doesn't just raise an alarm — it acts:
- Selects a more conservative cooling strategy (shifting cooling load away from water-heavy evaporative cycles)
- Prioritizes critical workloads — hospitals, emergency services — over discretionary compute
- Delays flexible tasks, like large model training runs, until conditions improve
- Maximizes recycled water use in the cooling loop
- Logs every decision into a downloadable audit report, so facility managers and auditors can reconstruct why the system did what it did
Sliders on the live dashboard let anyone simulate an environmental scenario and watch the index, the recommendation, and the audit log update instantly.
How we built it
We built HydroMind-X entirely on an Android device, with no PC access — which shaped almost every tooling decision.
- Two interconnected HTML,CSS,REACT,APIs,.Py, demo files, communicating cross-file via
postMessage: an AI chat interface carrying deep domain expertise on water stress and data center cooling, and an interactive dashboard modeling three geographically distinct data center profiles (Phoenix, Dublin, Singapore) to show the WAI logic responding to very different climate baselines. - A live judge-facing demo dashboard with animated water-tank visualizations, scenario buttons, manual sliders, and a running decision log — designed so judges could drive the scenario themselves rather than take our word for it.
- A pitch deck built with
pptxgenjs, styled in a minimalist dark-navy "Cyber Aqua" theme, with an investment ask scaled to INR for a prototype-to-pilot stage. Sincepptxgenjsdoesn't expose a transitions API, we injected slide transitions by post-processing the raw PPTX XML directly. - ICP research, narrowing our first buyer down to Facility/Ops Managers at water-stressed Indian data center sites — the people who actually own the cooling-vs-uptime tradeoff day to day.
HydroMind-X is not a dashboard you have to watch — it is one line in front of your model calls. Point your existing completion request at the gateway and every prompt is classified, priced against live water availability, and either served or deferred. No SDK rewrite, no new model contracts.ounder Portfolio ↗
Drop it in front of your AI traffic HydroMind-X is not a dashboard you have to watch — it is one line in front of your model calls. Point your existing completion request at the gateway and every prompt is classified, priced against live water availability, and either served or deferred. No SDK rewrite, no new model contracts.
Three lines to integrate
const res = await fetch("https://repo-viewer-83.preview.emergentagent.com/api/gateway/v1/complete", { method: "POST", headers: { "Content-Type": "application/json", "X-HydroMind-Key": "hmx_demo_key", }, body: JSON.stringify({ "prompt": "Summarise our Q3 churn drivers in three bullets", "wai": 74 }), }); const gate = await res.json(); gate.decision === "allow" ? render(gate.completion) : retryLater(gate.retry_when_wai_gte);
1 · Classify Send the prompt you already send. The gateway tiers it Critical, Important or Flexible — or you declare the tier yourself.
2 · Price it in water The tier is compared against live WAI from your cooling telemetry. Life-safety traffic always clears; discretionary traffic yields during stress.
3 · Serve or defer You get a completion, or a 'defer' with the exact WAI to retry at — so your client can queue instead of failing.
Challenges we ran into
- Android-only development. Every tool in our stack had to work without a desktop IDE or terminal — from writing and testing JavaScript to hand-editing PPTX XML for slide transitions.
- Cross-file state without a backend. Getting the chat interface and dashboard to feel like one coherent product — not two separate demos — meant carefully managing
postMessagecommunication with server in between. - Compressing a continuous system into a pitch. The real value of HydroMind-X is that it runs continuously; a five-minute pitch slot forced us to find a demo format (live sliders) that could make "continuous" feel real in a snapshot.
- Defending against the "redundant layer" objection. Judges pushed back hard that modern data centers already have climate-adaptive cooling hardware. Answering that meant sharpening exactly what HydroMind-X adds that hardware-level control can't: cross-system coordination and an auditable decision trail — not another cooling mechanism.
What we learned
- How to translate a genuinely multi-disciplinary problem — hydrology, data center thermal engineering, AI workload scheduling — into one legible number a non-technical judge or facility manager can act on in seconds.
- That constraint breeds precision: building without a PC forced simpler, more deliberate architecture choices than we might have made with unlimited tooling.
- How to steelman our own pitch — arguing the strongest version of the opposition's case before building the rebuttal — which sharpened the platform's actual value proposition far more than only preparing for friendly questions would have.
What's next for HydroMind-X
Moving from simulated sensor data to a real IoT sensor array on a pilot site, validating the WAI weighting scheme against actual reservoir and flow data, and formalizing the audit report format against emerging ESG and water-disclosure reporting standards.
