Inspiration
Our tap water has a lot of harmful chemicals that residents are not aware about. So, in order to create awareness to what goes into our bodies and environment we wanted to create this app to show how harmful the water we use everyday is. We were inspired by recent events in Japan where officials claimed that they will start releasing treated radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima power plant from 2011 (destroyed from the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in the same year) into the ocean, causing an uproar in the neighboring countries whose water systems will be affected by this decision.
What it does
It finds the location and the water utility it connects to and informs the user of the number of contaminants in the water and gives it a rating (green, yellow, red) of the water condition.
How we built it
We used python to build the code and the Agile methodology to develop our application. We created a scrum team made up of fungible resources that were able to perform both development and testing functions on python. Since this was condensed over a 36 hour period we held multiple standup meetings. The meetings were targeted to discuss what we had done since our previous meeting and what is to be done until the next meeting as well as any current roadblocks. We had one of our resources (David) acting as the scrum master for the team. Along the development process because we were using Agile we were able to pivot as needed before we had gotten too far along in the lifecycle.
Challenges we ran into
We did not know how to build an app in the limited time we were given, but we were able to create a skeleton code of how we want the program to run using python. Even with the skeleton code, we ran into a problem with reading the csv (input) file that contained data from our research.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our idea we came up with, this app has a lot of potential to help a lot of people including senior citizens, children, people with a weak immune system, and everyone who uses tap water on a daily basis.
What we learned
We learned that there is a lot of coding knowledge that is needed to make this a successful project. We also learned that almost all the side affects of these contaminants in our tap water can lead to cancer.
What's next for Hydro
We would love to expand on our project by implementing it into a smartphone app with GPS location services from all over the world, alerting the user with live alerts from current events, and a consistently updated water purity rating.
