Inspiration
Last year I lived in McCarty Hall. One secret that is not well kept about UW, is that it's dining hall is unsatisfactory. This lead me to search for literally any alternative to eating at the dining hall. I attempted to cook my own meals but I found that the dorm environment presented a host of challenges. I often went shopping for ingredients at nearly every meal since they had to be constantly restocked in my small pantry(space under bed)/(quarter of a mini)fridge, I had to lug around all of my ingredients and utensils to the nearby lounges looking for an unoccupied one, I had to wash dishes one at a time since there was no place to put wet dishes. This naturally prompted me to seek out partners to cook with, but I often found that friends were busy and reaching out to people on instagram wasted even more time.
What it does
Husky Dormers allows prospective cooks or just anyone looking to gather people for a purpose to plan an event. It was built with delegating cooking tasks between people, as a sort of team up so everyone gets a meal and they spend less time. It also serves as a general event planner than people can use to advertise or organize hangouts. The driving motivation is connecting students conveniently.
How we built it
We followed the engineering design process, constantly implementing our ideas, and reworking them to fit our needs. We used VS Code and built the website in React.
Challenges we ran into
As first time Hackers, we began the project sort of overwhelmed with all of the technology thrown at us. We had to look into each resource and decide as a team what technology would be practical for us to use and truly be necessary to see our idea to fruition. One example is Drizzle, which remnants of are still whispered about in our code. At the start, we added it to the project, but as time went on, we eventually realized that it was not necessary to our project and abandoned it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of it all! We very much like how it turned out, from the design, ease of use, and it's functionalities. We both agree it goes beyond what we expected we would do.
What we learned
It's necessary to always keep your goals in mind for a project so it ends up being more focussed.
What's next for Husky Dormers
Adding security features such as rate limiting, connecting to the student id or email, RLS on the database. Also adding more features for a wider variety of purposes and better AI integration to help users plan recipes or events even easier.
