Inspiration

Connected devices know when an event happens, but rarely whether a household should be interrupted. Hush makes interruption timing a household decision.

What it does

For each signal, Hush chooses speak_now, whisper_display, hold_for_digest, or silent_log. It balances urgency, relevance, freshness and actionability against scene cost and recipient focus. Safety bypasses soft rules. Repeated deferrals can escalate without turning low-value signals into emergencies. Every decision includes scored factors.

How we built it

A TypeScript policy engine powers a self-hosted Streamable HTTP MCP server using the official MCP SDK, Express and Zod. It exposes 13 tools, two static resources, a templated audit resource and two prompts. The browser opens a real MCP session and renders tools/call and resources/read responses, displaying actual JSON-RPC traffic. Four deterministic scenarios cover 22 signals.

A local video studio uses English macOS text-to-speech, Playwright captures and ffmpeg assembly. The English demonstration lasts 2 minutes 38 seconds without audio acceleration.

Challenges and what we learned

A school reminder repeatedly held back should eventually surface; a dishwasher should not become an emergency through repetition. Passing policy tests also does not guarantee a correct video, so essential rendered states are checked before capture.

Accomplishments

36 tests cover policy and MCP behavior, including sessions, replay escalation, digest delivery and arithmetic consistency. Smoke and probe scripts exercise the real endpoint. Escalated decisions retain their audit identifier, visibly strike through the previous verdict and display the updated score.

Honest limits

Alexa+ and household devices are simulated. The MCP endpoint is real, but this is not a live Alexa+ device integration. State is local, in-memory and single-tenant.

What's next

Real-device integration, household-specific preferences, authentication, persistence, consent and a quiet-hour review screen. The project is MIT licensed.
