Inspiration
The recent deadly hurricane that passed by inspired us to create a website focused on providing up-to-date hurricane preparedness information. We believe that having access to this information can help save lives and protect communities from the devastating effects of hurricanes.
What it does
Our website includes features like up-to-date safe zone maps & shelter maps, a live hurricane tracker and an emergency hotline to help people stay safe during natural disasters.
How we built it
We used HTML CSS and JavaScript to create the layout and design of the website. Additionally we incorporated APIs to gather real-time data on hurricane movements and updates. This allowed us to provide users with accurate and up-to-date information on hurricanes in their area. The combination of these technologies and API integration helped us create a functional and informative website for hurricane tracking.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we encountered was integrating the APIs seamlessly. We had to ensure that the data from the APIs was displayed accurately and in real-time on our website. Additionally we faced difficulties in making the website styled but not messing with the JavaScript embedded on the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team worked hard to provide valuable information to those in need during natural disasters. We feel good knowing that our efforts can help people stay safe and prepared during hurricanes. It's important to us to make a positive impact and provide useful resources to those who may be affected by these storms. We're happy to have created something that can help others in times of need.
What we learned
Participating in a 36-hour hackathon and creating a website for the first time as a team was an exhilarating experience. 10 out 10, would do again! We learned the importance of collaboration and communication as a team, as we had to work together to bring our ideas to life under a tight deadline. It was amazing to see how much we could achieve. We also discovered the value of time management and prioritizing tasks to ensure we met our goals. Overall the hackathon taught us valuable skills that we can apply in future projects and reinforced the power of teamwork in achieving success.
What's next for HurriHelp / Hura Ayuda
Now that our new website is so close to being up and running, we think the next step is to focus on driving traffic to it. We could start by promoting it through social media, or email marketing and search engine optimization.
