Hurricane Ready

Inspiration

Hurricane Ready was inspired by the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the challenges people face during hurricanes. We wanted to create an accessible tool to help individuals and families stay informed, prepared, and safe during these emergencies.

What it does

Hurricane Ready provides real-time alerts for incoming hurricanes, weekly weather reports to track potential hurricane watches, tips for handling emergency scenarios, and locations of nearby shelters. The app ensures users have the essential information they need to make quick, informed decisions during hurricane season.

How we built it

We developed Hurricane Ready using React Native to deliver a smooth cross-platform experience. For real-time weather data, we integrated the OpenWeather API and embedded google map features to map nearby shelters. Scheduled API calls and notifications were implemented to provide weekly weather updates, while the app's interface was designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring data accuracy and timeliness was a significant challenge, as users rely on the app for critical information. Integrating multiple APIs while maintaining smooth performance, especially in low-connectivity areas, required careful optimization. Additionally, designing an intuitive interface that could reduce stress during emergencies took multiple rounds of iteration and user feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating an app that has the potential to save lives. Successfully integrating reliable hurricane data and building a seamless experience for users under challenging conditions were significant achievements. Seeing the final product reflect our vision was incredibly rewarding.

What we learned

This project taught us the importance of precise data handling and designing with empathy. We gained experience with API integration, geolocation services, and delivering user-centric solutions. Additionally, we learned how to balance functionality and simplicity to ensure the app is effective during high-stress situations.

What's next for Hurricane Ready

Our next steps include collecting user feedback to identify areas for improvement and enhance the app’s effectiveness. We plan to add a login page to store user information, such as addresses, to create a more personalized experience. Additional features will include a discussion forum for community engagement, verified shelter locations, and an email notification system to alert users when hurricanes are near. We also aim to conduct extensive testing to ensure accuracy, reliability, and a seamless user experience.
