Inspiration
Hurricane Larry started as GoPro style footage filmed during (and in the aftermath of) an unprecedented wind storm/dust storm that took place in the days prior to the official opening of Burning Man 2025.
What it does
The video brings people inside this intense experience, then begins adding increasingly outlandish AI sequences (an RV flying through the air, a giant shark etc.), which blend into the live action. As the dust storm felt unreal to start with, the AI footage works well with it.
How we built it
I created the music track using Suno AI (having written the lyrics myself).
I created the AI visuals using "first frame/last frame" GenAI creation via the Hailou Minimax platform.
Challenges we ran into
Mostly the fact that I could have kept tweaking it and adding more segments. When "anything is possible" it's sometimes hard to know when to stop.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The video really resonated with the Burning Man community, many of whom had experienced the storm for themselves, across a number of platforms (Facebook, Instagram etc.)
What we learned
The more outlandish the starting point, the smoother the AI footage fits, and the most outlandish visual fx can feel relatable when you've experienced something intense IRL.
Also, I'd been aware of (and using) first frame/last frame techniques for a while, but not at this scale. I make it a point to learn features first, knowing they may be useful later, even if the use case isn't immediate.
What's next for Hurricane Larry
You can hear the music on Spotify (artist : Mark Day) & it's a benchmark for my sense of what's possible.
