Inspiration

We have encountered multiple issues with other mapping software, so we wanted to make a primitive version of an improved mapping software that can also analyze weather data. Our software is more customizable than the ones previously used.

What it does

MSLP is the basis for weather prediction in the atmosphere and impacts almost all weather phenomena. Graphing MSLP helps give clear borders to the hurricane and shows its relationship to precipitation levels. The lower the pressure, the more precipitation.

How we built it

We built our project using Python in Linux using a compiled module set of public graphing software along with publically available weather data.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges concerning data acquisition as large amounts of data take longer to get. Some of the software also had to be reinstalled for the project to run.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our graph's legibility and appealing color scheme.

What we learned

The colors of the graph's features are much more significant than we realized. Finding a cohesive color set that accurately displayed the data and had enough contrast to be legible taught us about contrast and accessibility. This was both of our first times at a Hackathon.

What's next for Hurricane Isabel Mean Level Sea Pressure and Precipitation

The next step for our project is to implement an animation feature that shows the progression of a hurricane from start to finish.
