Inspiration
I used to be a Graphic Designer, mostly advertising and finding clients through Twitter. I'd make media graphics like Youtube Banners, Twitch Overlays, etc. The final designs were easily transferred via email however I often found myself having to email mockups and sample designs to the client; and this became bloated. It would've been great if I could have used something like Imgur, however most sites like this simply compress the image and the image will lose it's quality. When working with digital art like this, it's crucial to maintain 100% original quality.
I am also doing this project to further familiarize myself with the MEAN stack.
What it does
Simply upload an image, or 'batch' of images - anonymously or with your registered account - and choose an expiry date of up to 1 day. View your image(s) by a simple unique link (URL), or through your account. Easily share your image with a URL, and have the option to 'destroy' the image as soon as someone with the link has viewed it.
How I built it
I built this app using a MEAN stack. It is currently still in development.
Challenges I ran into
Throughout the course of developing this app so far, I have ran into many challenges. I have figured out how WebSockets work, especially with 'socket.io'. I originally began using MySQL for the database, however figured out it'd be much easier and more efficient to use MongoDB along with it's GridFS system to store images.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Creating something I can show off to people and add to my portfolio
- Furthering my knowledge in Express and NodeJS in general
- Finally taking the time to learn MongoDB and become familiar with it
What I learned
- WebSockets, socket.io
- Furthered my knowledge of Angular and it's HTTP and Form modules.
- Furthered my knowledge of NodeJS and Express, learned parts of the NodeJS file system module.
What's next for Hurlpic
As it's still in progress, what's next is to allow users to share and view their uploaded images.
