The Problem

Food insecurity is on the rise in North Carolina. Over twenty two thousand people are food insecure in Orange County alone according to Feeding America. As food insecurity grows, so does demand for food offered by food pantries and other charities. Our team realized that Chapel Hill lacks a clear site that displays upcoming free meals in an intuitive way. Hungry in Chapel Hill aims to assuage this need.

What we built We recognized two problem spaces. First - we needed a way for people to see the local food options, and second, a way for organizations to input events and meal times. We now have site displaying the local food options (sorted by time).

How we built it We started on the back end with a Google sheet as a lightweight database. Using the Google sheets API, we were able to connect the sheet to our Flask/Python program, which eventually pushed the information to our website.

What is next Our next steps with Hungry in Chapel Hill would include enhanced calendar and scheduling features for organizations, as well as adding additional resources and content on the site.
