Inspiration

We love the moment when a single surprising fact makes you stop scrolling and say "wait, really?" Most trivia apps turn knowledge into an exam: timers, pressure, scores. We wanted the opposite, a place where curiosity feels like appetite. That became Hungry Apollo: a daily feast of short, surprising facts, served with art and a playful quiz on the side.

The name comes from the idea that knowledge is food for the mind. Apollo, the Greek god of arts and knowledge, is always hungry for more, and so are our users.

What it does

Hungry Apollo combines three independent experiences:

  • Facts: bite-sized stories about history, science, culture and the absurd corners of the world, each written to be read in under a minute.
  • Illustrations: every fact is paired with an original artwork in the style of a famous painter, so each card is something to look at, not just read.
  • Quizzes: standalone multiple-choice quizzes built from real, surprising stories. For example: Which service did Liechtenstein offer in the early 2000s? (Answer: you could rent the entire country.)

Premium access is powered by RevenueCat, which handles in-app purchases and subscriptions across iOS and Android (coming soon).

How we built it

  • Native mobile apps for iOS and Android (coming soon), with RevenueCat SDK managing purchases, entitlements and paywall logic in one place.
  • A content pipeline where every fact and quiz goes through writing, fact-checking and editing before localization. More than 300 quizzes have been produced so far.
  • Full localization into 14 languages across 17 regional variants: English, Russian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, Greek, Danish and Croatian.
  • AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT and others) used as a writing, localization, image creating and production assistant, with every piece of content reviewed by humans.

Challenges we ran into

  • Translation is not localization. A fun fact in one language can fall flat in another. A quiz about the Japanese word karōshi makes no sense for Japanese speakers if it asks them to translate their own word, so we rewrote such questions from scratch for each culture.
  • Fair quizzes are hard. Actually, we changed this part several times. A good wrong answer must be as believable as the right one. A question shouldn't distract users but stimulate their curiosity.
  • Tone across 14 languages. Keeping a playful, smart, food-themed voice consistent from Korean to Danish required a detailed style guide, down to national quotation marks and capitalization rules.
  • Go-to-market and App Store optimization. Every market is specific. Even the the word for "facts" or "trivia" that people search for differs by country (culture générale in French, Allgemeinwissen in German, 일반상식 in Korean), so each store listing had to be researched, not translated.
  • Monetization without friction. We wanted premium to feel like an invitation, not a wall. RevenueCat let us set up and adjust purchases quickly on both platforms without building our own billing backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A live app on the App Store, available in 14 languages from day one.
  • Android app passed review for beta test and will be available soon
  • First loyal users who open Hungry Apollo every day for daily facts in different parts of the word such as Brazil and Italy.
  • A growing library of 300+ carefully edited quizzes and facts, each paired with artwork.
  • A repeatable content and localization pipeline that lets a small team ship like a much bigger one.

What we learned

  • Curiosity is a stronger hook than competition: people come back for the "wow", not for the score.
  • Localization decisions shape discoverability as much as design does.
  • Integrating RevenueCat early saved us weeks of billing work and let us focus on content.

What's next for Hungry Apollo

  • New content categories and themed collections.
  • More languages and regional variants.
  • Experiments with paywall and offer formats through RevenueCat to find the best balance between free and premium value.
