Inspiration
Up to 811 million people – about 10% of the world’s population – regularly go to bed hungry. The war in Ukraine has made conditions worse in 2022, as conflict restricts global food supplies, drives up prices, and threatens the world’s most vulnerable people and countries.
In India, the country our team is based out of, a total of 79% of Indian households across 14 states which responded to the second “Hunger Watch” survey, reported some form of “food insecurity” in 2021.
As much as 25% of the families said that they faced “severe food insecurity”, the survey report released on Wednesday showed. (GFS of India – in 71st position as per 2021)
The survey was conducted between December 2021 and January 2022.
Even though we are facing severe food insecurity, in India, 40% of the food is wasted which is equivalent to Rs.92,000 crores a year. Stopping the wastage of food is one single step that can make others' lives better. Our aim is to help individuals/organizations to reduce the food insecurity by creating a digital platform to make people connect with NGOs to setup food donations.
What it does
There are a lot of NGOs who donate food, clothes, accessories to those who cannot afford to buy the same. We are trying to implement a platform wherein even common people can contribute to help the people in need.
To make this possible we are considering 3 workflows that allow the users of the proposed application to contribute, accept and distribute food to the people who are in need.
- Workflow 1 – Donor using the platform to provide food as a token of help. Individuals or Organizations can make use of this workflow.
- Workflow 2 – Distributor/NGO using the platform to accept and allocate a volunteer to collect the food from donor to the people in need
- Workflow 3 – Volunteer who sets the location, collects the food from the donors, and distributes the food to the Distributors/NGOs.
How we built it
HungerFree is a fully-responsive web app where people can donate food to NGOs. This app contains three user Types:
- Food Donor
- Volunteer

Below are the features of HungerFree:-
- Multi Factor Authentication to verify the user’s mobile number.
- Use of geolocation/geocoding APIs to track the location of the donor and to facilitate smooth pickup of food and delivery to the distributors.
