Inspiration

When people become absorbed in work or study, changes in their posture can go unnoticed. Hunch explores how clear, immediate feedback can make those changes easier to recognise during an ordinary screen session.

What it does

Hunch tracks head posture using compatible AirPods or Beats headphones, a supported iPhone camera, or both. After calibration, a live animated face reflects movement relative to the user's baseline, while nudges prompt them to check in.

Users can review saved sessions and inspect their posture timeline. Free sessions include up to 25 minutes of active session time, standard nudges and today's history. Hunch Plus adds uncapped sessions, full history and advanced nudge customisation.

How we built it

Hunch uses Swift and SwiftUI, Core Motion for supported headphone movement, ARKit for camera tracking and a custom Metal visualiser. RevenueCat powers monthly and annual Plus subscriptions through a custom paywall.

Camera processing happens on-device, and camera footage is not recorded. No Hunch account is required. Saved history can use optional private iCloud sync.

Challenges

A central challenge was translating sensor measurements into understandable feedback. Another was keeping live and saved-session results consistent while distinguishing recorded evidence from interruptions.

The purchase experience also needed to connect the benefit someone wanted with a clear offer and reliable access.

What we learned and what comes next

The design principle behind Hunch is that measurements become useful when people understand them. Our next evaluation will focus on whether users find the feedback helpful, whether nudges interrupt unnecessarily, and how Hunch fits into their routines.

Research into active breaks and changes in sitting position provides a rationale for investigating awareness and prompting tools. The wider intervention evidence remains uncertain and does not establish Hunch's effectiveness. Hunch is a posture-awareness tool; clinical benefits have not been established.
