Inspiration
The idea for Humanly was sparked by observing a troubling paradox in modern society: while billions of people are connected through social media, they often feel more isolated than ever in times of crisis or need. Incidents of harassment, especially those involving women, and the lack of timely help from nearby individuals or institutions underscored a painful gap.
- What if social media could evolve beyond sharing content to facilitating real-life support and change?
Humanly was envisioned as the answer: a platform where being social means being responsible and responsive.
What it does
- Sends real-time SOS alerts for emergencies, especially women's safety
- Notifies verified nearby volunteers within a 2 km radius
- Allows users to launch hyperlocal crowdfunding or awareness campaigns
- Empowers individuals to take real, local actions that make a difference
How we built it
- Designed a multi-phase MVP roadmap
- Used Flutter for the frontend and Firebase with Node.js for the backend
- Integrated Google Maps API for location tracking
- Configured Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications
- Set up Firestore for real-time database operations
Challenges we ran into
- Trust and Safety: Building a secure and abuse-proof system
- Real-time Scalability: Handling live alerts in low-connectivity areas
- User Adoption: Convincing early users to become verified volunteers
- UI/UX: Designing a stress-proof, one-click SOS experience
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
- Importance of user trust and platform credibility
- How to balance speed, simplicity, and security in emergencies
- Role of storytelling in driving engagement and adoption
- Need for multi-language and offline-first design in Bharat
What's next for Humanly
