Inspiration
The inspiration for this project was to create a solution that could benefit marginalized groups in a realistic way. We understand that segregation has lasting effects that create cycles that don't seem to end. We wanted to find a solution to break the cycle over time.
What it does
We created a website that informs people, potentially the government, and individuals that are aspiring farmers about how sustainable food practices can happen even in food deserts and food insecure areas. We wanted to create a call-to-action to farmers and communities.
How we built it
We utilized scrollama framework and JavaScript to host a local web application called scrollystory. To design the website further, such as to orient components, we used CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout our project we struggled to find information that supported our ideas. We had to adapt and change our ideas as we couldn't find information. We had problems coding our website and finding the right framework to represent our ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of coming to a solution that supports marginalized groups in areas that are stuck in a cycle. We identified that the problem can end with the younger generation, and we can break that cycle through education, governmental support (through reallocation of funding), and community efforts.
What we learned
We learned that nobody works without incentive. The government, especially, will not be motivated by the idea of goodwill. We have to create incentives for everyone involved in order to encourage change.
What's next for Human Diversity in Agriculture and Food Deserts
We hope that as farmers and governments on the state and regional level become more aware of our solution, it is implemented into areas that are considered food insecure.
