HulakZen: Agentic Multi-Channel Dispatch & Verification Platform
An enterprise-grade, agentic omnichannel communication hub and 8-stage email sanitization engine powered by AWS Communication Developer Services (CDS), SES, SQS, and Intelligent AI Tool-Calling.
Inspiration
High bounce rates and spam traps silently destroy sender reputation. For modern businesses, SaaS platforms, and financial institutions, having an email land in the spam folder — or failing to deliver a time-sensitive OTP or account alert — causes real customer attrition and compliance violations.
Traditional mass-mailing tools are blind: they send emails first and discover bounces later, damaging IP reputation. Moreover, businesses struggle to coordinate follow-ups across multiple touchpoints (Email, SMS, and WhatsApp) while managing campaign performance manually.
HulakZen ("Hulak" = Post Office in Nepali + "Zen" = Peace & Clarity) was inspired by a single vision: Never let a dead or dangerous email touch your sending pipeline, and automate intelligent omnichannel follow-ups with autonomous agentic AI.
What It Does
HulakZen combines pre-send hygiene with high-throughput multi-channel dispatch:
** Email Sanitization Engine:**
- Verifies deliverability without sending an actual email using a multi-layered check:
Decoupled AWS SES Multi-Channel Dispatch:
- High-throughput campaign batching via AWS SQS and a dedicated
ses-mailermicroservice. - Real-time event feedback loop through AWS SNS and status queues capturing Deliveries, Opens, Bounces, and Complaints.
- Multi-channel orchestration supporting Email (SES), SMS, and WhatsApp follow-up workflows.
- High-throughput campaign batching via AWS SQS and a dedicated
Autonomous Agentic AI Assistant:
- Integrated AI assistant equipped with native tool/function calling.
- Inspects real-time credit balances, campaign metrics, list sanitization jobs, and automation states directly via secure backend function invocations.
Developer-First API Layer:
- Granular API key provisioning (
sk_live_...with bcrypt hashing) and usage tracking for seamless CRM/signup form integration.
- Granular API key provisioning (
How We Built It
We designed HulakZen as a resilient, event-driven hybrid architecture:
- Frontend: React 19, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS v4, Framer Motion, and Recharts for interactive deliverability analytics.
- Backend Core: Node.js, Express 5, Piscina worker threads (preventing CPU event-loop blocking during intensive regex/DNS operations), and Redis for high-speed caching and rate limiting.
- AWS Infrastructure:
- AWS SES (Simple Email Service): High-volume, rate-throttled transactional and bulk delivery.
- AWS SQS (Simple Queue Service): Buffers outbound bursts and decouples background workers.
- AWS SNS (Simple Notification Service): Real-time webhooks capturing delivery events and bounce loops.
- AWS S3: Secure encrypted storage for large recipient CSVs and email templates.
- Agentic AI: Autonomous conversational agent utilizing function-calling tools (
get_credit_balance,get_campaign_metrics,get_validation_stats,get_automation_status).
Challenges We Ran Into
- Low-Latency SMTP Handshakes Without Getting Blacklisted: Direct SMTP verification requires testing mail servers without sending messages. We engineered distributed Redis-backed queue locks and domain throttles to avoid triggering destination rate limits.
- CPU Offloading: Bulk validating tens of thousands of records synchronously in Node.js would freeze the HTTP server. We solved this by implementing a Piscina worker thread pool that executes parsing and DNS checks across separate CPU threads.
- Reliable Bidirectional Status Ingestion: Synchronizing SES feedback (deliveries, soft bounces, hard bounces, spam complaints) under heavy load required building a fault-tolerant SQS polling daemon with exponential backoff and duplicate event deduplication.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- 99% Bounce Reduction: Our 8-stage pipeline catches invalid, disposable, and blacklisted emails before they ever reach an SES dispatch queue.
- Sub-Millisecond Cache Hits: Redis caching combined with MongoDB persistence enables lightning-fast lookups for recurring verification requests.
- Action-Oriented AI Agent: Created an agent that doesn't just chat, but autonomously queries database states and triggers real diagnostic workflows through function calling.
- Clean Microservice Decoupling: Separating the
ses-mailerservice from the main web server allows horizontal scaling of mail dispatch independently from the web dashboard.
What We Learned
- Deep mastery of AWS Communication Developer Services (CDS), particularly tuning SES configuration sets, event destinations, and SQS dead-letter queues (DLQs).
- Designing multi-threaded Node.js architectures using Piscina for high-throughput computational workloads.
- The mechanics of real-time deliverability, SMTP protocol response codes, and reputation preservation for financial-grade communication.
What's Next for HulakZen
- Amazon Bedrock Autonomous Content Optimization: Expanding our agent to generate and A/B test subject lines and email copy for higher open rates.
- Predictive Bounce Modeling: Machine learning models to predict recipient churn probability prior to verification.
- Multi-Agent Omnichannel Router: Fully automated escalation paths that switch an email to SMS or WhatsApp if critical notifications (e.g., OTPs or payment alerts) remain unread.
