Inspiration

The idea for Huetunes stemmed from a fascination with how music shapes our moods and how color amplifies emotion. I wanted to create a space where these two powerful forces could merge, crafting a multi-sensory experience that transforms the way we interact with music. Inspired by the way soundtracks bring scenes to life and how colors evoke deep feelings, I envisioned Huetunes as a tool to seamlessly blend sound and color, turning every playlist into an immersive and personalized experience.

Functionality

Huetunes allows users to explore the connection between sound and color through intuitive mixed reality interactions. By combining a vinyl-inspired interface with a dynamic passthrough environment, the app transforms music into a visual and emotional journey. Users can pull a virtual knob to switch tracks, drag the spinning vinyl to adjust playback, and watch as their surroundings shift hues and tones to match the mood of the music.

Each track brings a unique vibe: fiery reds for intense workouts, calm blues for a relaxing lo-fi session, or vintage yellows for nostalgic tunes. Huetunes makes music tangible, blending natural gestures and vibrant visual transitions to create a world where every song is more than just sound—it’s an atmosphere.

Challenges i ran into

One of the challenges was achieving real-time synchronization between music and environmental color transitions. Fine-tuning the passthrough effects to ensure they reflected the energy of the track while maintaining an immersive experience required extensive experimentation. Designing natural gestures, like pulling a knob or dragging a vinyl, to feel fluid and intuitive also involved iterative prototyping and user feedback. Additionally, ensuring smooth performance while dynamically adapting the environment was a technical hurdle that required creative problem-solving.

What I learned

Developing Huetunes taught me how to integrate the emotional impact of music with the immersive potential of mixed reality. The project deepened my understanding of Unity and the Meta XR SDK, particularly in designing responsive passthrough environments that adapt dynamically to audio cues. This experience reinforced how small details, like smooth transitions and synchronized visuals, can elevate an app from functional to magical.

What's next for HueTune

The future of Huetunes lies in expanding its capabilities beyond playlists. Imagine using AI to create personalized color palettes for each user based on their emotional input or integrating collaborative modes where multiple users can share synchronized musical experiences. Huetunes could also be extended to meditation, productivity, or storytelling apps, enabling users to create tailored environments for every activity. With further advancements, Huetunes could even incorporate motion tracking to create interactive music-driven light shows, pushing the boundaries of how we experience sound and color in mixed reality.

Huetunes is more than a music app—it’s a gateway to a multi-sensory world where sound and color amplify each other, creating unforgettable experiences.
