Inspiration

Holi is the festival of colors. Colors add uniqueness and beauty to everything that we see in our lives. But unfortunately, around ~4% of the world's population faces a condition called 'Color blindness' where they would not be able to see all the colors in the way it should be.

This Holi, we wanted to help people with color blindness by enabling them to experience internet better. People with color blindness face difficulties in seeing some colors while surfing through the websites - they don't get to see the content which are displayed in the colors which they can not see clearly.

For an example, a person who has a type of color blindness called protanopia can not see shades of pink. Hence, he might face difficulties in seeing texts and images with the color pink. Hue Pal can help the person by optimizing the color scheme as per the type of color blindness the user faces.

What it does

Hue Pal is a Chrome browser extension which optimizes any web page according to the type of color blindness faced by the user. Hue Pal provides better accessibility to people with color blindness by changing the color scheme of the website to a comfortable color according to the type of color blindness.

All the content including images, texts, buttons and backgrounds are automatically changed into the color scheme which is comfortable for the user.

color blindness

As of now, Hue Pal is configured for 8 types of color blindness.

How we built it

We built Hue Pal as a Chrome browser extension. Talking about the technical part, we used JavaScript to tweak the colors in the CSS properties of the website - according to the type of color blindness choosed by the user.

We made a landing page for our chrome browser extension and hosted it on Linode. We are thankful to GoDaddy for the domain - huepal.co !

Challenges we ran into

  • Tweaking the CSS with JS was challenging.
  • This is our first chrome extension, so we had to spend alot of time in learning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Making a successful submission
  • Overcoming obstacles and errors (thanks to the mentors and stackoverflow!)
  • Team work
  • Making a project that can be helpful to others

What we learned

  • Learning to make a chrome extension.
  • Tweaking CSS with JS.
  • Exporting and packaging the browser extension.

What's next for Hue Pal

  • Adding more types of color blindness
  • Allowing contributions on GitHub
