1. Briefly describe your project in relation to the challenge prompt

Huddle Closet has a strong focus on empowering low-income students, first-generation students, and even those just looking to break into the corporate world but unsure where to start. Many opportunities are tied to corporate functions and professionalism, so this app is geared towards increasing knowledge of professional attire and providing clothes at an affordable price by implementing a price ceiling of $50. Anyone is free to sell or donate their used business clothes to give users the confidence they need to tackle the business world. As business students, a primary issue we faced was finding affordable yet trendy business clothes that speak to our personal style while staying consistent with various corporate dress codes. After surveying 42 college individuals, we found that 80% of students find it moderately to extremely difficult to find business clothing that fits their budget, and 55% of students lack a solid understanding of the different types of corporate attire. Since 83% of individuals surveyed stated they find fashion inspiration from social media platforms, we created Huddle Closet - a discounted commerce platform for business clothes where users can share their business outfits and learn about the distinctions in business wear.

  1. Describe your main design decisions and how they contribute to your product

Since our app utilizes multiple features ranging from a marketplace, sharing platform, and learning platform, our main focus was creating distinct yet cohesive pages for each feature while keeping navigation straightforward and intuitive. As a social commerce app, we wanted to maintain a unique identity while preserving intuitive usability. Therefore, we kept design principles such as Nielsen’s 4th heuristic of consistency and standards and Norman’s 1st principle of discoverability in mind. Since Nielsen’s 4th heuristic states that users tend to follow platform conventions, our main challenge was differentiating our app from other commerce apps while maintaining intuitive usability. To combat this, we leveraged our penguin theme to enhance the market pages and added a learning aspect to our app. The penguin concept of Huddle Closet references penguins with black and white coloration reminiscent of a tuxedo suit, a subtle nod to our business focus. We achieved this through including images such as icebergs, eggs, and the ocean. The “Huddle” aspect of the application is inspired by how penguins group in huddles. This idea was extended to our app since it references connectivity and sharing our outfits and styles with other users. To address discoverability, we incorporated a consistent menu bar at the bottom of the screen across all our main pages so users could easily toggle between features. We also implemented back buttons on all secondary pages to give users a “backdoor shortcut” to streamline their browsing experience. Finally, in terms of visual appeal, we made sure to maintain a consistent color palette. We focused on shades of muted blues with a golden accent color to act as contrast and to complement the blues. Having an accent highlighted important icons - like the save button “bow” feature and the editing pencil - and made the application more intuitive overall.
