Inspiration

I was interested in participating in Google Summer of Code. While I had the chance I wanted to try something totally different. I came across this project and it seemed very different and challenging from what I've done before.

How it works

In the Mono Develop IDE, user can now have JavaScript support. This includes autocomplete, code folding, document outline, refractor action, a parser, and syntax highlighting.

Challenges I ran into

Writing a parser for one is a very daunting task. Luckily, I found an open source engine, from which I was able to strip the parser and make modifications to meet my requirements. Another challenge was understand the existing code base of MonoDevelop, which is huge and complex.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

JavaScript autocomplete, code folding, document outline, refractor action, a parser, and syntax highlighting are the features that were added.

What I learned

I learned a lot about how IDEs work in the background. All the threads and code that run to make it very powerful.

What's next for https://github.com/harsimranb/monodevelop

More enhancements to JavaScript support and rolling out to users ones it passes Xamarin QA.
