Inspiration
Learning Chinese is difficult when students only have PDF exam papers and scattered audio files. HSKMAX was built to turn HSK preparation into a practical mobile experience: open the app, choose a level, and practice like a real exam.
What it does
HSKMAX is a progressive web app for HSK practice from level 1 to level 6. Learners can choose a level, open an available exam, answer questions, track their progress, mark questions to review, and continue later thanks to automatic local saving. The app supports exam-style timing, a response sheet, reading and listening sections, image-based questions, Chinese characters, pinyin, and a mobile-first interface.
How we built it
The app is built as a Firebase-hosted PWA using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Firebase Hosting, Firestore data access, a service worker, local storage, and progressive audio handling. Codex helped structure the app, transform HSK paper material into interactive question flows, improve the mobile experience, and prepare the project for public submission.
Challenges
The hardest part was converting static HSK exam material into a clean digital experience while keeping the feeling of a real exam. Audio handling was also important because listening sections need to start reliably on mobile devices.
Accomplishments
HSKMAX already presents the six HSK levels, includes interactive exam screens, saves progress automatically, and works as an installable web app. It makes HSK practice more accessible for learners who mostly use their phone.
What's next
Next we want to add more official-style practice sets, stronger scoring analytics, learner accounts, vocabulary review, teacher dashboards, and AI-assisted feedback for writing and pronunciation.
