Inspiration

As someone navigating the U.S. healthcare system, I saw friends and colleagues underutilize HSAs—missing out on triple tax benefits. Most tools were too complex, so I set out to build a simple, actionable dashboard to make HSA optimization accessible to every HDHP enrollee.

What it does

HSA Optimizer is a single-page dashboard that simplifies HSA management: calculate annual contribution limits (including 55+ catch-ups), track qualified medical expenses, analyze tax savings, get guidance on spending vs. investing HSA funds, and project retirement value against other savings vehicles.

How we built it

I started by mapping core user needs (e.g., contribution tracking, tax advantage visualization) to UI sections. Used React for the frontend to enable real-time calculation updates, Chart.js for visualizing growth trajectories, and TailwindCSS for mobile-responsive design. Backend logic focused on IRS-aligned calculation rules (e.g., $A = P \times (1 + r)^n$ for investment growth).

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was translating IRS tax rules into error-free calculations—especially catch-up contributions and qualified expense eligibility. Balancing simplicity with accuracy (e.g., validating extreme return rate inputs) also required iterative testing to avoid misleading users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that turns complex tax/financial rules into intuitive, actionable insights. The real-time calculation engine is 100% aligned with current IRS limits, and the decision support feature gives personalized guidance that users actually apply to their finances.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of U.S. tax law for HSAs and how to translate regulatory logic into user-friendly code. I also learned that financial tools succeed when they prioritize clarity over complexity—users don’t want jargon, they want clear next steps.

What's next for this project

First, add dynamic IRS limit updates (instead of hardcoding) to keep pace with annual changes. Then, integrate secure data persistence for expense tracking, and explore partnerships with HDHP providers to expand access. Finally, add personalized tax rate estimates based on income brackets to refine savings projections.
