Since a young age, all of us have been deep-rooted in saving the environment. Coming to Superposition IV, we just knew that we were going to do a project that regards sustainability, especially through recycling. We wanted to build something practical, something that was doable in the time that we had, but still impactful. We decided not to extend our project to all the food products in the world, but to keep it short in regards to the food served at Superposition IV. A lot of the food packaging here is already recyclable/compostable, but a lot of people do not know which bins to throw it in - for example, there were many people who were asking which bin to throw their garbage in. We also noticed people putting recyclable/compostable items in the incorrect bins. We designed this project to help inform those who do not know as much about recycling. A lot of the symbols on products can be a bit confusing to a user, so we decided that having a clear list would be more helpful. We documented all the foods/food packaging that was handed out at this hackathon. We located all the recycling/composting/landfill bins on the second floor (only the second floor due to accessibility reasons), and carefully documented them on a map of the HQ. Together, we created a website using Firebase to avoid dealing with back-end code. On the website, we have our list of food products in conveniently-color-coded text, that corresponds to the self-made map mentioned earlier. Our user-friendly website may be small and only extend to this event, but it is these small steps that really make a lasting impact in the long run. We must do as much as we can during this ongoing crisis, even if that is something small.
