Inspiration
Pokemon Go for adult fitness! We have technologies to help track and sift through our health related data, but how do we motivate people to actually use these technologies on a consistent basis to improve their health? By providing a story-esque goal along with gamification of exercise, we can build a unique and compelling experience that will hold users interests long enough to build up the habit of regular exercise.
What it does
The app tracks your fitness activity with the Fitbit API. The app has levels to complete based on physical activity. The first level is the easiest, in the city landscape and progressively gets harder with the next levels, in the jungle and in the mountains. You can pass a level if your Fitbit tracks a certain number of steps, a certain heartrate, etc. Each level has a 30 day fitness challenge to complete. We also plan to include a feature which will suggest fitness classes in your area to attend as part of a level or a challenge.
How we built it
Used the Fitbit API, Android Studio and Java
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first hackathon and first time building an Android app!
What we learned
We learned about the OAuth process and worked with the OkHttp library. We also became familiar with using git version control on Android Studio.
What's next for HOYAHiker
We will continue to work on it and hope to develop a stable APK. We would like to extend the capabilities to build a community of users. We believe this is a compelling solution that makes exercise more competitive and appealing.
