Inspiration:
We created this website because just like our client base, we are current A&M students who occasionally need some help academically. We wanted to create a cohesive and fun site for students to use in order to find support in a welcoming environment. Also, we wanted to create a space where upperclassmen can market themselves to get employed as tutors. We not only wanted to support students creating their own small businesses, but we also wanted to make the process easy so that potential tutors can connect with students as quickly and efficiently as possible.
What it does
Our site logically matches students who need a tutor (called “heroes” on our site!) for a class offered at TAMU to another student who wants to earn some money from tutoring another student. Our site allows them to connect and book times for tutoring sessions. Students can filter based on price and timing in order to find a tutor who fits their needs.
How we built it
We used 3 primary languages: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and assigned a role for each of us. We also utilized the bootstrap framework in order to make our front end visually appealing to our users. We also store login credentials and account information on a real-time database using google firebase in order to make profile matching possible.
Challenges we ran into
Our team consists of members with a variety of different skill sets and skill levels. Collaboration and integration of the different parts of our site was a challenge for us at first, but as we progressed through our project, we learned how to tackle the issue, utilizing GitHub as well as VS Code Liveshare in order to maximize our efficiency as a team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team has learned a lot from the course of our project. One accomplishment that we are proud of is how we utilized our diverse skill set in order to use back-end, front-end, and graphics
What we learned
This experience provided a learning opportunity for all of us because we got to learn from each other’s strengths while also bettering the skills we already had. In all honesty, some of our teammates had little to no experience coding in HTML and CSS. However, after this weekend, our team not only learned more about different programming languages and applications, but we also got to learn about what coding looks like professionally. Additionally, we got to learn more about what to expect in the next couple of years from the mentors who always gave great advice.
What's next for Howdy Heroes
We hope that this project can truly guide students through their time at A&M, and inspire them to become heroes for others. It should be a place of collaboration, peace, and enthusiasm. Our plan is to continue developing that site even after the event, launch, and update even while it is running.
