Inspiration

For Howdy and High Noon, we were inspired by old timey whodunnit mysteries. We wanted a create a fun little detective, solving game that was reminiscent of classic movies that are set in small towns where tragedy strikes.

What it does

This project runs a locally hosted Detective Murder Mystery. The player can choose townsfolk to interrogate and may win by either by catching the murderer or loses by locking up an innocent. Players will go through the town, visiting different places, and collect clues on who may have caused your mentor's untimely demise.

How we built it

We built this using JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. We first started by creating a concept. This included storyboarding, and mood boarding on the visual end and creating the base code, adding it to a repository in the git hub, and adding creators on the technical end. Then, 2 people got to work on the visual aspects/illustrations. While this was happening, one person continued building the base code. Then, once all the illustrations and story line were done, we worked on one section of the game, figuring out how we wanted it to look, what features we wanted, and just general configurations. After this, we took this base section and duplicated/modified it to achieve our desired result, adding transitions between each section / looping features. In the end, we were able to create a high quality product for the short amount of time we were given.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into included formatting and creating a visual novel style. It took multiple rounds of trial and error to obtain the design and look that we were going for and overall took the most time of creating this project. However, despite this, these design elements really brought our vision to life and created a eye-catching product to present our mystery story.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Together, we are definitely proud of the final project and progress that we had made during this hackathon, with learning how all the systems work and being new to git and web design, we weren't certain of how this would go. Finishing the project in and of itself is an accomplishment for us as we did not think that it was going to happen. Along with that, customizing the UI in the game and having everything flow cohesively was a massive achievement.

What we learned

Through this project, we all learned how to work collaboratively on the same project simultaneously through the usage of git and GITHub. We had learned how to code using the languages that were utilized in this project, as well as, figure out how to present the project in a way that represent the visual novel look we were going for. In addition to this, we were able to learn basics of web design and creating custom sites using code instead of a premade engine.

What's next for Howdy and High Noon: A Western Whodunnit

The next steps for Howdy and High Noon include creating more whodunnit stories surrounding this town, packed with new locations and characters as you, the detectives apprentice, is filling in the vacant role your late mentor has left behind.
