Inspiration
Our inspiration was issues of winter and getting around during inclement weather. We focused on getting resources to community members who need support during weather conditions such as heavy snow. We were inspired by existing campaigns in the City of Calgary, such as "being a snow angel".
What it does
Howdy allows users to submit requests for support in shovelling snow from snow angels, among other city resources, all in one place, such as weather and traffic conditions.
How we built it
We built our prototype using Figma, and we coded it in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and Python, integrating a City of Calgary pathway map, and an OpenAI API.
Challenges we ran into
The major challenges we ran into were using and integrating the APIs and effectively using the vast amount of the City of Calgary data for a specific purpose. We had no experience integrating things like APIs into our projects before this, so there was a steep learning curve and much effort required to develop those skills and implement our ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our accomplishments in using the City of Calgary data and integrating both the OpenAI and City of Calgary APIs, as we had never done those before. We are also proud of how we used our time and worked together effectively as a team to achieve this.
What we learned
We learned many new skills, especially regarding troubleshooting and debugging our code, especially in language and concepts that we are unfamiliar with. We also learned how to use data, such as datasets, and things such as APIs in our projects, combining the knowledge we have while experimenting with new technologies.
What's next for Howdy!
Howdy can expand as a one-stop-shop app with resources for Calgarians for every season. While we have begun with winter, a season that impacts people's lives in many ways, we plan on supporting Calgarians throughout the year, in different contexts with information and data that they can use in an accessible and simple way. Some potential summer features include parks and pathway information, as well as air quality monitoring.
