Inspiration
Artificial Intelligence is transforming education faster than schools can adapt. Millions of students already use AI every day, but most AI tools are designed to provide answers rather than teach. We wanted to build an AI platform that encourages critical thinking instead of dependency. Our vision is simple: help students learn with AI, not rely on AI.
What it does
HowDoAI is an AI-powered learning platform for K-12 education that combines guided AI tutoring, AI literacy, and prompt engineering. Instead of giving direct answers, the tutor asks questions, provides hints, explains concepts, and adapts to each student's learning style. Teachers and parents receive dashboards to monitor progress while schools gain governance, privacy, and safety controls for responsible AI adoption.
How we built it
We built HowDoAI using React, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, and AWS. The AI experience is powered by Google Gemini as our backend large language model, enabling intelligent tutoring, guided reasoning, and personalized learning conversations. The platform includes authentication, role-based access control, AI safety guardrails, prompt engineering, analytics dashboards, and cloud-native deployment.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was preventing the AI from simply giving students the answer. We designed prompts and conversation flows that encourage guided reasoning and critical thinking while maintaining age-appropriate responses. We also focused on balancing AI capabilities with privacy, safety, and education compliance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built the entire platform as a solo founder.
- Created an AI tutor that teaches instead of simply answering questions.
- Integrated Google Gemini to deliver personalized AI tutoring.
- Combined AI tutoring, AI literacy, and prompt engineering in one platform.
- Designed the platform with security, privacy, and responsible AI principles from day one.
What we learned
Building AI for education is as much about pedagogy as technology. Students learn more when AI guides them toward answers rather than providing them immediately. We also learned that responsible AI requires strong guardrails, transparency, and teacher and parent involvement.
What's next for HowDoAI
Next, we plan to pilot HowDoAI with schools and families, expand our AI literacy curriculum, enhance personalization using Google Gemini, and continue building the safest and most effective AI learning platform for K-12 education.
